"I have long believed that there are certain things that golf clubs should not try to do themselves, and marketing is at the top of that list. Golf clubs these days are complex and sophisticated businesses, and club managers and the small band of volunteers who run the clubs quickly become overwhelmed by the many demands that are placed on them. In May 2021 we decided to contract out our marketing to a specialist, and Sam Poole was selected from amongst 3 or 4 candidates. We ran a trial 3 month project focussed entirely on generating membership subscription revenues. That went so well that we signed up to a one year agreement with Sam to deliver a much broader based campaign. He is a low handicap golfer with experience of club management, so understands exactly what we are trying to do. We use our internal marketing expertise to set some stretching strategic goals and objectives in partnership with Sam, and he then delivers. So far, since May 2021, that has amounted to £29,000 of new member revenues that we would not have achieved ourselves, and the new year has barely started. He also has the flexibility to run short, sharp and specific campaigns, as well as adjusting his overall strategy to meet our changing objectives. As a result, his activities in other directions have borne significant fruit.
